Guidelines for the safe and efficient operation of compressed air and vacuum systems

The VDMA guidelines are the result of a collaboration of manufacturers in the field of compressors, compressed air, and vacuum engineering.
Key regulations detailed in the guideline include the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) from 2002 and the regulation regarding the operation of working materials (DGUV rules 100-500).

Obligations under the Industrial Health and Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV)
In addition to commissioning inspections for monitored systems, which must be performed by an approved inspection body or person as per §14 BetrSichV – in some cases the inspection can be waived, particularly in the case of complete and ready to use machines pursuant to Annex 5, no. 25 BetrSichV – the employer must perform a risk assessment pursuant to §3 BetrSichV.

Regulations regarding the operation of working materials
The main regulations for the operation of working materials have been governed in the Industrial Health and Safety Ordinance since 2002.
Another source of information is the BGR 500 “Operation of Working Materials”. Also relevant are the TRBS 1111 “Risk assessment and safety evaluation”, TRBS 1201 “Tests of working materials and monitored systems”, and TRBS 1203 “Technical regulations for operational reliability – qualified persons”.
